Preparing for competition

Preparing for competition

As skater continues to grow and excel in their technical skills, it's time to explore the exciting world of figure skating competitions! These events can be incredible motivators, offering a fantastic reason to fine-tune your skills and showcase your hard work.

Your coach will guide you every step of the way, determining the perfect event for your skater.

Before the Big Day

  1. Plan Ahead: For those early morning starts, some parents prefer to travel the day before, and you can find information about nearby accommodations on our site. Remember to book early to secure the best options.

  2. Dress the Part: Coordinate with your coach to select the perfect skating outfits. Ensure any new attire fits comfortably and is safe for performance. Don't forget to try them out on your home ice.

  3. Hairstyle Matters: Decide on the hairstyle you'll rock and practice it at home. Keep those locks away from your face, and make sure those hairpieces are secure – no rogue bobby pins allowed!

  4. School Notification: If your skater needs days off from school, be sure to inform them in advance.

  5. Stay Connected: Maintain open communication with your coach. Discuss your expectations, where to meet, practice ice availability, costume choices, and any pre-competition jitters. Remember, they are here to support you!

  6. Plan Your Journey: Give yourself plenty of time to reach the competition venue, especially if you're not familiar with the route.

  7. Essentials to Pack: Here's a checklist of items to bring:

    • Clean laces and polished skates
    • Neatly tied back hair
    • Warm-up jacket and gloves
    • Competition dress and beige tights (for girls), dress shirt and pants (for boys)
    • Skate guards, soakers, and a towel
    • Sneakers for off-ice warm-up
    • Consider bringing off-ice warm-up equipment like a skipping rope, skate spinner, and yoga mat if available
    • Spares: extra laces, tights/socks
    • Screwdriver and screws
    • Solo music (master and copy)
    • Thread and needle
    • Hairspray, clips, bobby pins, and makeup
    • Band-Aids, tissues, and any necessary medications (like inhalers)
    • Water and a small non-messy snack
    • A cozy blanket
    • Camera

And most importantly, don't forget to wear your biggest smile!

What to Anticipate

Upon arrival, locate the registration desk to sign in your skater and drop off their music. Familiarize yourself with the rink names if there are multiple rinks and find the nearest bathrooms.

Ask about the medal presentation location and timing, and don't forget to find your coach. Inquire if they are running ahead or behind schedule.

Look for the area where results will be posted to see the skating order. When results arrive, a final sheet will be taped over with the conclusive outcomes.

Whenever possible, cheer on your fellow skaters – your support means the world to them.

Remember that your coach may have a tight schedule, especially if there are multiple rinks. They might need to be in two places at once, but they are always dedicated to your success.

If this is your first competition, don't hesitate to seek assistance from a fellow club member. We've all been there and are more than willing to help! You've got this! 🌟🔥💫
